JUNIOR SAILING
Mengeham aims to develop a passion for dinghy sailing in our youngsters which will lead to a lifelong love of the water.
We have a very active junior contingent at the club. Children begin their sailing journey in the safe and sheltered water directly in front of the clubhouse – with a focus on having fun and learning the basic skills. As they progress, there are opportunities to sail on West Mud and eventually racing in and around Chichester harbour.
Progression is supported through:
- RYA Youth Training Scheme courses (see training)
- Parent led practice sessions – these are run on a volunteer basis so we are keen to have family member’s young and old helping us out
- Class/race specific coaching
- Shooting Stars race series
- Harbour Explorers cruising days
- Junior Race Week in August for those aged between 7 and 18
A range of club owned boats, that can be hired for a small fee, supports their developmental pathway. Available boats are:
- 3 x RS Teras
- 3 x RS Fevas
- 3 x Laser 2000s
- 2 x Lasers 4.7 and Radial rigs
- A Wayfarer
- An RS 400.
We look forward to seeing you on the water!
The Jeremy Strugnell Fund
The Jeremy Strugnell Fund is founded on a legacy left to the Club by the late Jeremy Strugnell for the purposes of furthering the sailing experience of young club members.
The fund is administered by the Club’s vice presidents and is supported by donations or legacies from individuals and businesses, and the proceeds of particular events; it is also credited annually with subscriptions of cadet members.
Jeremy himself was instrumental in developing training at the Club in the 1970s, and accordingly most of the funds are applied in the provision of boats for training, although individual awards are also made.
Anyone interested in supporting the work of the Fund in any way should contact the Club’s President or Training Principal.
